“These athletes are the absolute best in the world. The best skateboarders in the world, the best BMX bikers in the world have all been invited by ESPN to come to this event. You’ll see the best athletes in their craft,” Holloway said.
This year’s qualifier runs Friday and Saturday, June 28 and 29, at Rhodes Park and will feature three events: BMX, Women’s Skateboard and Men’s Skateboard. The action promises to be one of the year’s most well-attended community events.
“This is a wholesome, healthy opportunity to watch these athletes,” Holloway said. “You’re watching a healthy event with your family.”
Participating athletes come from all over the world, and several of them hail from the City of Trees. International competitors include two Japanese skateboarders—three-time winter X Games medalist Ayumu Hirano and Sky Brown, who will compete in the X Games for the first time this year. Dalton Beeson and Elliot Saxton, both from Boise, will also skate for a chance to go to the X Games finals in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Saturday-Monday, July 20-22.
Attendees can join in on the action with a variety of activities. There will be vendors and a family zone, a bike parade and an inflatable obstacle course. At 5 p.m. on Friday, two para-athletes, Aaron “Wheelz” Fotheringham and Christiaan “Otter” Bailey, will show their skills in specially designed wheelchairs and conduct a clinic for athletes with disabilities. That clinic will be presented by Boise Parks and Rec and the Challenged Athletes Foundation.
“Our partner has really created a theme this year for the event. Really, the theme is we want to inspire people, regardless of their circumstances, they can have a fulfilling and athletic life proven by the Challenged Athletes Foundation,” Holloway said.
People who want to see the action but unable to attend the event will have several ways to catch the qualifier. It will be streamed live through the X Games Facebook page and YouTube channel. People can also catch coverage of the event on ABC Saturday, July 6.
The event is free to attend. Bleacher seats are first come first serve on Friday, June 28. Bleacher seats for Saturday, June 29, are sold out.
