- The City of Boise is preparing to install 806 new "smart" meters.
Boise Weekly first wrote about the smart meters in 2011; the city installed dozens of the meters and sensors in 2013; ACHD threatened to dig out the sensors without an operating agreement; and during the summer of 2014, the city threatened to duke it out in court. Things went downhill from there.
That was then. After an ACHD election, which brought about a shift in district oversight, district commissioners agreed to a revamped plan that will formally allow the smart meters on Boise streets.
This coming Tuesday, May 19, Boise City Council will be asked to approve an expenditure appropriation of more than $310,000 "to complete the purchase and installation of 806 meters, which would increase the total to 1,000 meters."
The money would be appropriated through the city's Capital Facilities Contingency fund and moved to the Capital Improvement Project fund, specifically earmarked for parking meters.
