An eastern Idaho woman has filed a tort claim against the Idaho Falls Police Department, alleging officers used unnecessary force against her runaway 12-year-old son.
KIDK-TV reports Amy Olzak said her son's injuries included broken teeth, bruising on his neck and face and a possible concussion.
Olzak reported her 12-year-old son missing on March 13. When a friend located him, Olzak notified police.
"I just wanted them to be aware," she told KIDK, saying police came over. After Olzak talked to an officer, "he walked over to my son. Then he put my son's hand behind his back and like lifted him up in the air and slammed his face into the trunk of a car," she said.
Olzak said her son was taken to a hospital for treatment but was kept in handcuffs.
IFPD Police Captain Royce Clements told KIDK Idaho law "allows officers to arrest runaways," but added the matter is now the subject of an internal affairs investigation. IFPD does not require its officers to wear body cameras.
