Another legal technicality has waylaid Valley County's efforts to seize properties at the beleaguered Tamarack Resort near Donnelly, but county officials say it's only a matter of time before they take the land and buildings to recoup unpaid taxes dating back to 2011.
In 2007, Tamarack saw $500 million in real estate sales and its ski runs were being hailed as some of the best in North America. What promised to be one of the finest resorts in the United States ended up in bankruptcy, with half-finished buildings and a bench warrant for former owner Jean-Pierre Boespflug.
The McCall Star-News reports Tamarack owed about $12 million in unpaid property taxes as of December 2015. New TR Acquisitions owes $4.7 million on 40 parcels inside the Valley County resort, including condos in the Lodge at Osprey Meadows, more than three dozen lots in the Blue Mountain subdivision and two timber stands. Additionally, back taxes are due on the Canoe Grill ($180,000), Tamarack's recreation center ($101,300) and an unfinished expansion of the lodge ($130,000). UWW, of Puyallup, Wash., owns 183 land parcels at Tamarack and owes back taxes of $905,000.
But the Star-News reports some of the tax notices were incorrect and Valley County officials must now send out corrected versions of the documents—the third time that notices have been challenged in court.
In July, Valley County seized ownership of Tamarack's West Mountain Golf Course, which frames many of the homes that owe back taxes. The golf course didn't open this summer.
