The HIV/AIDS pandemic helped define the 1980s and early '90s, as public health officials struggled to classify, contain and treat the hitherto rare conditions. Flying M Coffeehouse has been helping support local HIV/AIDS awareness and advocacy programs almost since the beginning. Starting in 1993, Valentine for AIDS has brought Boiseans together for a silent auction of local art, with proceeds benefiting the Safety Net for AIDS Program (SNAP). The nonprofit helps those living with HIV/AIDS with housing, utility bills, grocers and insurance patients, and last year's Valentine for AIDS, featuring work from about 250 local artists, raised more than $24,000 for the cause. Since 1993, the event has brought in more than $280,000.
