Just one little comma between the words, and Team Sleep might be more of an order than the name of a band. But with California-based Team Sleep's music, listeners are not dropped into a snoring, drool-on-the-pillow kind of snooze. The music resides in that strange place between consciousness and sleep, a rich, ambient sound that takes the usual rock band elements (guitar, bass, drums, keyboards) and combines them with chill electronic sounds and bent vocals to create a sound both lively and lulling.
This tour takes Team Sleep on the road with California's Monster in the Machine, also purveyors of an electronica/guitar mix sound. Strata, another Golden State alt-rock group—with flavors of Mutemath—joins the fray and the whole experience is rounded out by fellow California electronic project, Sonny.
Team Sleep is vocalist/guitarist Chino Moreno of The Deftones, DJ Crook on turntables, Zach Hill (of Hella) on drums, Rick Verrett on bass and keys, and guitarist Todd Wilkinson. The band saw plenty of accolades for their 2005 self-titled debut and are working on a new full-length, that, if the four tracks on their MySpace site are any indication, will be an amazing listen. And just because the music is a little more subdued than some of the stuff out there now, that doesn't mean it doesn't rock. Team Sleep understands you don't have to scream to be heard.
Dec. 2, $15, 7 p.m., Team Sleep, Sonny, Monster In The Machine and Strata. The Venue, 521 Broad St., BoiseVenue.com.
