Still A Cowboy

Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter is getting lots of praise for ordering that all new vehicles purchased for state agencies be low-emission and flex-fuel or hybrid models.

Just don't ask Otter to do the same.

Otter is still commuting to Boise from his ranch in Star—a distance of about 15 to 17 miles—in a large diesel pickup that isn't known as a green vehicle.

"It's a big old Ford truck," said John Hanian, Otter's spokesman. "He's a cowboy."

On days when Otter does not drive himself, he is chauffered to work by Idaho State Police troopers.

Of course, ISP cruisers, which are not offered in an environmentally friendly version, are not subject to Otter's order.
