Ada County commissioners were unanimous in their decision to take someone actively serving in the Ada County Sheriff's Office to take the top job. Outgoing Sheriff Gary Raney had made public that his choice as a successor would be Captain Stephen Bartlett, a 12-year veteran of the Sheriff's Office and former chief of police for the City of Eagle. Ada County GOP officials said their first choice to succed Raney was Randy Folwell, who retired from the Sheriff's Office in 2011.

But ultimately, county commissioners agreed with Raney and on Monday announced that they had voted unanimously to appoint Bartlett as the new county sheriff.

In April, Raney, a 30-plus-year veteran of the sheriff's office and Ada County's top cop since 2005, announced that would retire from the post at the end of June. Raney has plans to work with the U.S. Department of Justice, providing problem-solving assistance to law enforcement agencies that need federal help to improve their departments.

Bartlett will fill the remainder of Raney's term which ends in January 2017. Bartlett will presumably run for office in November 2016.
