In a news release dated July 8, BAM announced it had been selected to join the American West Consortium—a co-op of the Nevada Art Museum, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art in Oregon and the Whatcom Museum in Bellingham, Washington.
The partnership includes a two-phase exhibition program and professional development guidance for the museums.
The first exhibition in September will bring pieces from the Smithsonian American Art Museum to each participating museum. The second will be a collective effort from all participating museums to curate an exhibition using pieces from all six museums. That phase is expected to debut in 2021.
“As the national museum for American art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum believes it is our responsibility to share our most valuable resource—our collections—with the American people, including those who are not able to visit Washington, D.C.,” wrote Stephanie Stebich, Margaret and Terry Stent Director at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
