The Record Exchange, a beloved Boise institution, is turning forty! To celebrate four decades in the City of Trees, The RX is bringing singer-songwriter Josh Ritter to town for a free, one-time-only performance following the release of his ninth studio album, Gathering (2017, Pytheas Recordings/Thirty Tigers), on Sept. 22. An Idaho native, Ritter has been performing his signature blend of folk, rock and country since 1999, and was named one of Paste's 100 Best Living Songwriters in 2006. Although he usually travels with The Royal City Band, his show in Boise will be solo.
"When I started writing Gathering, I felt tired of living in the shadow of my earlier self, my earlier work—but more than discouraged, I felt charged with the possibility and the freedom of cutting myself loose from my own and others' expectations," Ritter said in an artist's statement. "Listening to these songs now, I hear uncertainty, mania, laughter and sadness, all vying for their place."
