"Our big question is, 'Where does our food come from?'" said executive director, Becky Morgan.
Field trips to area farms and grocery stores show kids the economic spider web tying producers to transporters to consumers. The garden will also host a farm stand every Wednesday staffed by camp goers and their parents. Morgan hopes this process will help open a dialogue about food.
"There's a big disconnect between kids and food, and kids and the outdoors," Morgan said. "The educational system pushes kids inside and we hope to draw them outside to connect with the environment in a meaningful way."
The BUGS camp is currently full for the summer, but there is a waiting list in the event that anyone drops out. The camp meets every Tuesday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. After gardening, each session will also treat students to a fresh lunch whipped up by fellow campers. Now that's a true Happy Meal.
