As a way to bring sharks into the middle of a desert, the Discovery Center of Idaho is bringing the Planet Shark: Predator or Prey exhibition to Boise to explore the world of sharks.

“It gives the community an opportunity to see something that they wouldn’t have been able to see before,” said Hannah Schaeffer, director of operations at DCI.

On loan from Australia-based Grande Exhibitions, Planet Shark opened June 10 and has filled the center with shark replicas, thousands of shark teeth and other fossils. The exhibition also includes science demonstrations to “give [Planet Shark] more of an intimate, hands-on feel,” Schaeffer said.

Planet Shark describes the history of the animals and their important roles in oceanic ecosystems. It also shows how films films like Jaws and Deep Blue Sea have given these apex predators reputations as man-eaters in popular culture.

“It will go a lot into about the science behind sharks and how they swim and how they live and how they eat,” Schaeffer said.

Children can attend week-long summer camps surrounding the exhibition and adults can peruse the center at the 21-and-over event, Sharks After Dark, slated for Friday, July 21. The Aquarium of Boise, in partnership with DCI, put together a live-feed shark camera exhibit and will give expert show-and-tell demonstrations every Friday.

“There’s lots in store for that partnership between us and the Boise Aquarium doing all of this and that’s going to be really fun and exciting,” Schaeffer said.

The exhibition will run through a date in September still to be decided.
