Driving west anytime soon—particularly through Ontario, Ore.? Think twice about going near the cellphone.
The Ontario Argus Observer reports Oregon State Police handed out 60 citations to drivers using their cellphones during a four-hour period on Sept. 18. Law enforcement officials said because those results were so alarming, OSP conducted another sting on Oct. 23 and, with the assistance of Nyssa and Ontario police, handed out 45 more citations to cellphone violators.
"The Oregon State Police and our local law enforcement partners remain committed in reducing our primary causes of injury and fatality crashes, most of which are as a result of distracted driving," said an OSP spokesman in a news release.
The Argus Observer reports OSP officials said distracted driving has become such a problem that "it has surpassed impaired driving."
