Roughly 200,000 rainbow trout were killed last week when a chlorine pipe began leaking into raceways at the Idaho Fish and Game hatchery in Grace. Turns out the facility manager was doing a routine disinfection of vats (empty ones, we hope) when a pipe began leaking into nearby tanks. The result: a whole lot of dead fish.
It seems that none of the chlorine leaked into nearby Whiskey Creek or the hatchery settling ponds, but Fish and Game officials are still looking into the cause of the leak. In the meantime, the Grace hatchery is asking other facilities around the state for any extra fish they can spare.
