Oliver Cotting: Human Reflections

When: Sept. 2-Oct. 28, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. 2018

Playing on the unreliability of our senses to conceptualize the world in its totality, Oliver Cotting presents a graphite world of ethereally obscured human bodies. Meanwhile, avian, reptilian and mammalian creatures appear wakeful and observant, even if skeletal. Though representative in style, these allegorical portraits, heavy with symbolism, intend to stimulate uncertainty and ambiguity rather than didactic reflections of unknown individuals, for “a concept of absolute certainty to one woman is a concept of spurious logic to another…a concept vague and ambiguous to one man can be absolutely unequivocal to another.”
