As early voting in the midterm elections gains momentum in Idaho and states across the U.S., NBC News reports that Republicans are outpacing Democrats in casting ballots in what the network calls "key states." NBC says GOP-affiliated voters are surpassing Democratic voters in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Montana, Tennessee and Texas. Only in Nevada have Democratic-affiliated voters exceeded Republican-affiliated voters thus far. Key U.S. Senate races are underway in seven of those eight states and will be pivotal in determining which party controls the chamber.
It's not unusual for politicians to endorse or oppose a statewide ballot initiative, but the Twin Falls Times-News reports that two of the Magic Valley's largest employers, Chobani and Clif Bar, have formally endorsed Proposition No. 2 on the Idaho ballot, which calls for the expansion of Medicaid.
The Idaho State Board of Education announced Monday that, beginning next week, a 14-person committee will begin vetting candidates and interviewing semi-finalists in its effort to find the next president of Boise State University. Last spring, a separate list of finalists was presented to the board, but board members passed on each of the nominees and, instead, appointed an interim president for Boise State.
The Guardian reports that archaeologists have discovered what they believe to be the world's oldest intact shipwreck at the bottom of the Black Sea. The vessel, believed to be Greek, appears to have been undisturbed for more than 2,400 years.
Meanwhile, the trade magazineCruise Arabia & Africa, is reporting that a replica of the Titanic is being constructed, after facing previous delays due to financial problems. The Blue Star Line says it expects that Titanic II will set sail in 2022, retracing the original ship's planned route. The original Titanic sank in the North Atlantic Ocean in April, 1912.
The fashion world is mourning the loss of Gilberto Benetton, one of the four founding siblings of the iconic Italian fashion brand. Benetton died at home of an undisclosed illness, in the northern city of Treviso, Italy. He was 77.
