'Men on Boats'

Gem Center for the Arts, Aug. 9-24

by

In the 19th century, American explorers delved deep into the American west, often packing up what little belongings they had and going out in search of places to start new lives. Men on Boats is, in many ways, just a snippet of that story of Manifest Destiny: In it, Civil War veteran John Wesley Powell embarks on an adventure to chart the Green and Colorado rivers with a slim crew of volunteers, and they'll brave the rapids through Colorado, Utah and New Mexico while enduring supply losses, broken boats and close living quarters. The show, presented by HomeGrown Theatre, comes with an added twist: The cast is entirely comprised of women and people of color. The possibilities of a story usually populated by white, male characters expand exponentially when the roles are occupied by people who rarely have a spotlight in the history of America's expansion.

8 p.m. $10-$35. 2417 Bank Dr., Boise, hgboise.org.
