McCall Citizen Panel: Raise Our Taxes, Fix Our Streets

"It's an embarrassment to drive our roads in their current state."

A citizens panel, put together by McCall City Manager Gene Drabinski, has an unusual request: Please raise our taxes.

The McCall Star-News is reporting that the McCall City Council will get a chance to gets its first look at the proposal during a Friday, June 27 work session. That's where the 13-member citizen panel will recommend a 1 percent increase to the city's general sales tax rate. And the proposed revenue would be  earmarked for public works funds such as street and water infrastructure maintenance.

"It's an embarrassment to drive our roads in their current state," said committee member Scott Fereday, according to the Star-News. "apparently, as I learned in these meetings, the state of our water [and] sewer systems is even more dilapidated."

In particular, the citizen panel pointed to needed improvements to First, Second, Park and Lenora streets with an approximate price tag of $5.7 million for repairs.
