Thanksgiving the Idaho Way
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to cook an entirely local Thanksgiving meal. That means dispensing with the boxed stuffing. It means foregoing the ease of canned pumpkin. And, sadly, an all-Idaho Thanksgiving does not include the iconic Butterball turkey. If really cooking Thanksgiving dinner—as opposed to rehydrating boxed food and reheating canned food—has you completely perplexed, check this out as a primer.
The University of Idaho's Ada County Extension Office hosts a class next week on how to cook a locavore's Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, scoring a locally raised turkey this time of year is a long shot since they're all spoken for months before the leaves start falling. But you can still learn where to find local ingredients and how to do things like cook a pumpkin pie from scratch. Registration is required. Sign up by contacting Barbara Abo, 208-377-2107. Dinner Swap Day
This week, Boise Co-op is dedicating a day to the homecooked meal. Boise Co-op has coined Saturday, Nov. 15, as Neighborhood Dinner Co-op Day in order to promote the idea of starting a dinner co-op. At a loss? The idea is basic. Team up with a couple of families in your neighborhood and have each cook dinner for everybody one or two days a week. You, the Smiths, the Joneses and the Cleavers can all take turns cooking dinner for all four families so that everyone ends up with a homecooked meal everyday even though they may only do the work of a homecooked meal one day a week.
Locals Diana Ellis, Andy Remeis and Alex Davis recently released their book Dinner at Your Door: Tips and Recipes for Starting a Neighborhood Cooking Co-op. The team will be at Boise Co-op on Saturday from 1-4 p.m. signing copies of their book.
This Week's Wine and Dine
Tavern Wine Market may be this week's best bet yet again. And hopefully you've picked up the paper early this week because the tasting is Wednesday, Nov. 12, 5-8 p.m. Whet your whistle with a vino from Spain and, as always, a few nibbles for only $12 per person.
