Idaho State Championship Results
Played by 43 contestants over President's Day Weekend at the BSU Student Union Building, the new Idaho state champion is Karl Disher, who won all six of his games after entering the tournament ranked second with national a rating of 1985 points. Second place was won by Dillon Smith (1842) who scored 5-1, losing only to Disher. Third overall was Hugh Myers (1574), 4.5-1.5. Other prize winners were Patrick Flynn and Kurt Douglas-first and second in Class A; Daniel Pocol, David Eacker and Mark Anderson-first to third in Class B; Steve Bieler, John Watson and Tom Booth-first to third in Class C; Bill Mabry, Fred Woodbridge and Rickey Weathers-first to third in Class D; John Nahlen, Matthew Dominick and Erica Barkell in first to third in Class E; Alex Harmon and Andrew Hoth-first and second in Class F. Glen Buckendorf won top senior. Mattias Jons won top BSU student. Steve Smith won top under 800 rating and Katie Hong won top female.
Idaho State Scholastic Championship
Idaho high school, middle and elementary school students have an opportunity to compete in the Idaho State Scholastic Chess Championships March 4-6. Friday evening, a special event for interested students include the bughouse and blitz competitions begin with check-in at 6:30 p.m. with prizes presented to winners in grades 7-12, 4-6 and K-3. Saturday, K-3 and 4-6 divisions will play six games with prizes overall in each division and in each grade. Entry fee is $10. Check in time is 8 a.m. The grades 7-12 division will compete with four games on Saturday and two on Sunday. Entry fee is $10 plus $13 minimum U.S. Chess Federation membership. Games in these categories are nationally rated.
