- Boise City Council President Lauren McLean filed to run for mayor on May 20.
"At the end of the day, this is about the conversations we need to have," she said.
McLean said the decision to run came recently, but the tenor of what she has heard from the public, particularly about transportation issues and transparency at the highest levels of city government. That said, McLean insisted that her decision to run was quite recent.
"If you'd asked me six weeks ago, I'd have said, 'I don't know,'" she said.
In filing, McLean has launched a direct challenge to incumbent Mayor Dave Bieter, who has also filed for re-election, and who hand-picked McLean to sit on the city council in 2011. Since then, McLean has been re-elected twice and helped spearhead several high-profile city initiatives, including in the arenas of open spaces, livability and the "welcoming city" resolution.
