Landfill: Smells Like Money

Ada County inks deal to sell methane gas

The half-life of garbage is getting longer. Last week, Ada County Commissioners, together with execs from G2 Energy of Atlanta, Georgia, kicked off the deal to sell methane gas produced by the county landfill.

According to Ada County officials, the combustible gas will go to power two generators, which will then be sold to Idaho Power.

The contract, which should net Ada County about $325,000 per year, was inked in September 2005, and will generate 3.2 megawatts of green juice, enough to power 2,400 average Treasure Valley homes, according to a news release from the county.

BW got, uh, wind of this project last year, when the county began contract negotiations with G2 (BW, "Green Gas, Cool Wind," Dec. 14, 2005).
