The preceding headline may not be news to those who knew Ms. Johnston. She died in a car crash in Idaho in 1977. But to those who thought that she has been residing in Hawaii since 1983, subsisting on a steady flow of welfare checks ... twas not Karen Johnston ye knew. Twas faux-KJ. Sorry for the loss you didn't know you had suffered.
Johnston's impersonator, Victoria Donnelly-Korondi, pleaded guilty this week to stealing $308,000 in welfare benefits, according to a story in the Honolulu Star Bulletin. She has began bilking the system under Johnston's stolen identity in 1983, and was charged for the benefits she received from 1988 to 2005. In exchange for Donnelly-Korondi's guilty plea, Big Island Circuit Judge Glenn Hara will consider a request by the county prosecutor to be lenient in sentencing. Apparently Donnelly-Korondi, who is actually a Swiss citizen, is afraid of being deported because she doesn't know anyone in her home country anymore.
