Another head has rolled in Gov. Jim Risch's administration. This time it's Idaho Department of Corrections Director Tom Beauclair. Risch announced he was installing former Ada County Sheriff Vaughn Killeen after Beauclair announced a sudden retirement after five years on the job.
The timing raised some eyebrows, given that 100 Idaho prisoners remain in limbo in Texas, where they were shipped to relieve overflowing Idaho prisons.
When asked if he asked Beauclair to resign, Risch said, "I don't want to dwell on that situation." Beauclair sent a statement to reporters shortly thereafter saying that he had "been talking about retirement for some time," and that he supports Killeen. He will be giving up a salary that only recently got a hike: In May, Beauclair got a 6 percent raise, to $122,449.
