The Idaho State Police have agreed to investigate alleged wrongdoing by Canyon County Sheriff Kieran Donahue after both the Canyon County prosecuting attorney and Idaho attorney general declined to investigate, citing conflicts on interest.

Complaints against Donahue, filed anonymously with the AG, accuse the sheriff of abusing his position to operate the nonprofit K. Donahue Foundation Inc., which runs the Man Up Crusade raising awareness of domestic violence.

In a press release Oct. 27, ISP agreed to complete the investigation into the relationship between the sheriff's office and the nonprofit. The agency will then submit its report to the Twin Falls County prosecuting attorney's office, which will serve as special prosecutor in the case.

Canyon County officials learned about the attorney general's inquiry Aug. 17, when the AG submitted a records request for Donahue's activities dating as far back as Nov. 22, 2014.

According to the Idaho Press-Tribune, Donahue remains unaware of the exact nature of the complaints against him and investigators have not questioned him in relation to the case. He has said he will cooperate with the investigation.
