There are gingerbread houses and then there are the masterpieces created by students at the Milwaukee Area Technical College.
The one that really took the cake (and top prize) came from Adrielle Szerbat, 18, who spent more than 100 hours making a delicious replica of the house that flew away after being attached to a bunch of balloons in the instant Disney classic Up. The culinary student crafted green grass by using toasted coconut, graham crackers for sidewalks and Cocoa Krispies for the ground under the house. As for the balloons? Jelly beans.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports more than 30 gingerbread wonders, made by MATC students, were on display through much of the month at the Milwaukee Public Market.
Believe it or not, the Up house didn't win the competition. According to the MATC website, a castle designed by MATC student Gabrielle Hansel took the top prize. Hansel? Really.
