Homedale Man Shot by Police Dec. 26 Dies in Boise Hospital

A Homedale man who was in critical condition at a Boise hospital after being shot by police officers Dec. 26 has died, the Idaho Press-Tribune reports.

According to Ada County Coroner Dotti Owen, Gilbert Heredia, 38, died either Dec. 31 or Jan. 1 at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center. His body is currently at the Ada County Coroner's Office. 

A Homedale Police Department officer and an Owyhee County Sheriff's Office deputy were transferring custody of four children to their mother Dec. 26 when Heredia brandished a handgun. According to police, when he refused officers' orders to put down the gun, Heredia and law enforcement exchanged gunfire.

Heredia sustained critical injuries and was taken to Saint Alphonsus. Neither of the officers were injured in the firefight, and one of them wore a body camera.

The shooting is being investigated by the Critical Incident Task Force.
