Steve Guerber, the former head of the Idaho Historical Society who came under such fire for overspending his state credit card and losing track of other state funds, has been let off the hook by Ada County Prosecutor Greg Bower. Earlier, a review of Guerber's spending by the state controller found $5,468 in inappropriate charges for meals, gifts and other expenses. Bower announced last week that no criminal charges would be filed against Guerber. It's not for lack of trying; Bower worked for months on the case, reviewing applicable case law, but found that state code really only allows people directly in charge of money to be found liable for its misuse. Guerber has said all along the problems were the result of filing and clerical errors in his agency, and has maintained his innocence from the start.
