I've been to Granny's restaurant numerous times. One local HVAC expert and I often stop there for breakfast on a Saturday morning on our way to taking a load of brush and garden debris from his yard to Hidden Hollow Landfill. When asked to go to Granny's for a review, I knew I had to take said HVAC expert with me.
We arrived for an early lunch around 11:30 a.m. The small restaurant was relatively busy with diners young and old. We seated ourselves and after perusing the menus, I chose the reuben sandwich and fries and my lunch date decided on the lunch special: a bacon and mushroom cheeseburger with fries. We also ordered a small scone to share. Eating at Granny's and not ordering a scone is like going to a movie and leaving halfway through-you may have missed the best part.
While we waited, we chatted about the restaurant's atmosphere and really friendly service. Just then, our waitress brought our scone and a bottle of honey to the table. It felt rather decadent eating the sweet, fried bread before our meal instead of after. And, mmm. It was hot, soft on the inside, crispy on the outside and covered in melting butter. My arteries have never been more disappointed in me. Our meals arrived and they looked delicious. The mushrooms on the HVAC guy's burger were canned and not visually appetizing, but the burger was thick and the cheese was hot and melty. My reuben was delicious. It had thin slices of meat covered in melted cheese, sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing. Our fries were fresh and crispy and our waitress brought us a side of dill ranch dressing that was perfect for dipping.
We were completely full, but not too full to notice that the prices were a little high for diner sandwiches. The total for lunch, including tip, was $22. Since lunch was on me, it was a hefty hunk of change. But, the HVAC guy has been good to me over the years and ultimately the delicious food was worth it. However, the next time we get the brush out of my yard, breakfast's on him.
-Amy Atkins without the HVAC guy is like a scone without honey.
