It's sad news but perhaps it's not really a surprise that Hunter S. Thompson took a handgun from his infamous collection of firearms and shot himself. The founder of Gonzo journalism had been suffering severe pain from back surgery, had recently had his hip replaced, and had also broken his leg. His life had always been a model of free-willed consistency; in a sense, he had always taken his life into his own hands. And based on an extensive interview from his last years, there's no reason to believe he might not choose his own way out one day as well.
