In the past, The Cabin's Readings & Conversations series has brought to town luminaries like Junot Diaz and George Saunders. For its 2016-17 season, The Cabin will kick off with Presidential Medal of Freedom-winner, Ms. magazine founder, activist and feminist icon Gloria Steinem, who will speak Monday, Sept. 19 at The Morrison Center—and the stream of literati doesn't stop there.
Speaking on Wednesday, Nov. 16, is National Book Award-winning novelist Colum McCann, whose Let the Great World Spin won the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award the same year in 2011—the same year Dublin was dubbed a UNESCO City of Literature.
U.S. Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera will speak Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017. The list of accolades his work has garnered is long but include PEN, National Book Critics Circle, New York Public Library and Smithsonian awards, National Endowment for the Arts and Guggenheim fellowships, several nominations and grants, and most recently, the Robert Kirsch Award for Lifetime Achievement. Herrera also works with Chicano migrant at-risk youth through activism and school programs.
Sisters Aimee and Karen Bender will take the stage together Thursday, March 9, 2017. Refund, Karen's collection of short stories, was a 2015 National Book Award finalist. Aimee's five books have received Pushcart Prizes, and the New York Times called her 2014 short story collection, The Color Master, "a notable book."
Novelist and short story author Lauren Groff will take the stage Thursday, April 13, 2017. Her Fates and Furies was a New York Times bestseller, an Amazon 2015 pick for Best Book of the Year, and a finalist for the 2015 National Book Award.
