On Friday, January 13, Mike Blomquist takes guitar and banjo in hand and releases his new CD, Warm Waffles. For some, Friday the 13th might be the unluckiest of days to do anything so daring as to release a new CD. For Blomquist, though, it just might be the perfect day for this interesting guy to showcase his interesting CD.
Warm Waffles is a lo-fi production, which is not to say it's not well made. It is. It's just a simple CD. No percussion. No keyboards. There is only Blomquist's voice--which at times is almost a whisper--and his guitar and banjo. In a couple of the songs, both the lyrics and the music wander in surprising directions. There's a lot of free association in both the lyrics and the music and while that technique may not be everyone's cup of syrup, it works on Warm Waffles.
But, don't just take my word for it: Go to Blomquist's myspace site www.myspace.com/theswedishfish to hear some of these new songs. Then, go check out Blomquist in person on Friday and see what kind of luck he has.
