I was pretty excited to see Black Tooth Grin listed on the Neurolux Web site calendar for this month. Yes, I do realize that both the Gig of the Week and the Road Show are Neurolux performances, but both bands are worthy of a little attention this week.
I met the lead singer for Black Tooth Grin, Justin, at The Core's Battle of the Bands on Saturday. Even though they were slated to play last (around 11:30 p.m.), he told me that when anyone asked when they were playing, he answered, "6 o'clock." "That way," he told me "all of the bands would have support."
And support they had. There were enough people wandering around in Black Tooth Grin T-shirts to populate a small city. They all seemed to know and like each other, and to a person, every single one of them listened to all of the other bands perform and clapped loudly after each performance.
On August 31, Black Tooth Grin again shares a stage, but this time with Tommy Dirtweed and Belle. This promises to be a night of some ass-kickin' dirt rock. On myspace.com, BTG lists their influences as Clutch, Black Label Society, Motorhead, Clutch, Slayer and Clutch. Members Justin, Jeremy, Taylor and Lou bring classic rock right out of the past and slam it down on the stage. Vocals are raw but not rough and the music rocks hard but still has plenty of melody. If I was a betting woman, I'd bet that Black Tooth Grin is headed for some bigger and better things. Catch them on stage while you can. You never know ... you might soon be sporting a black BTG shirt yourself.
August 31, 9 p.m., with Belle and Tommy Dirtweed, $3, Neurolux, 111 N. 11th
