Fish Tales

He who smelt it, may be a smelt

: "Guest are like fish, they begin to smell after a few days."

: I don't know where I first heard that phrase but I believe there is some truth to that. But what if those same fish farted? They'd smell more wouldn't they? But fish don't fart. Do they?

: According to a report last fall in

New Scientist

: magazine, biologists have identified a "mysterious, underwater farting sound to bubbles coming out of a herring's anus." Yes, it may be true. Fish can fart. Previously, no fish had ever been known to emit sound from its anus or to even be capable of producing such a noise. Ahh, the progress of science.

: Fish have been known for some time to emit grunts and buzzes using their swim bladders in the abdomen, but it wasn't until biologists witnessed herring emitting bubbles from their anus coinciding with the sharp raspberry sound that they put two and two together. They have named the noise the Fast Repetitive Tick (FRT) and believe it may be used as a communication device to keep the school together at night.

: In humans, this same sound has a scattering

: effect. :
