Uninspired by weekend outings, we chose a sure-fire happy hour in a humdrum bar previously deemed worthy only as a pre- or post-Alive After Five gathering point. For us, it's always been a too dark basement bar with slow tenders pouring margaritas too heavy on the bar sour. We admit, this week we were in search of a place we could complain about when we bellied up at BoDo's Cafe Ole, where we decided to live dangerously by ordering house margaritas instead of top-shelf.
And then there was Jacob. A new tender in town, his quick-draw pour, mean tequila hand and fervently friendly aura reminded us of days when Carlos Duncan was the man behind the bar. Jacob made a mean marg and was quite skilled at doing what a good bartender should do, that is, augment our original 2-4-1 $4.95 tab to just under $20.
And what of the bar? Slim pickings on tap and in the whiskey and vodka displays are made up for by the obvious choice: tequila. We dipped into a $9.50 Corazon while inspecting the liqueur line-up and determined that sweet-drink sippers would do well in just about every color of the rainbow, as the Pucker is represented in almost every flavor. The happy hour is 2-4-1 everything from 4:30-6 p.m. and Wednesdays have margs 2-4-1 until close.
