Different But The Same

Bestseller lists and the Potter boy

by

The sixth and latest in the J.K. Rowling wizardly juggernaut, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, was released on July 16. The book sold an estimated 6.9 million copies in the U.S. in the first 24 hours that it was available, breaking the one-day sales record of 5 million set two years ago by the franchise's previous installment, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. A record 10 million copies of the book were sold worldwide in that same one-day period. There just can't be anyone left who thinks Harry Potter is kids' stuff-or a fad.

Downtown at the Book and Game Co. (906 W. Main St., 344-8088), the top 10 bestseller list hasn't changed much in the past month, but Harry Potter's arrival "blew away" all the other books in terms of sales, store owner Sean Ahern told BW.

Regionally, the Booksmith, San Francisco's leading independent bookstore, has a bestseller list that reflects very different tastes in its readers and likewise, Portland's own book institution, Powells, has its unique top 10 bestseller list. In both cases, though, their top book is-you guessed it-Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

If we turn our eye to the national book chains such as Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble, we find similar trends-very different book lists with the same No. 1 book. (And in fact, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is Barnes & Noble's year-to-date bestselling book.)

Harry Potter tops all these disparate U.S. lists, but looking internationally, it's also the bestselling book for online bookseller Amazon in France and Germany.

In light of this recent global publishing furor, that's sooome kiddie lit.
