- Sen. Dean Cameron, Gov. "Butch" Otter's choice to be Idaho's next Insurance Director.
As co-chair of the powerful Joint Finance and Appropriations Committee and the Senate's Health Care Task Force, Cameron is the second-highest ranking member of the Idaho Senate. A native of Burley, he was first elected to the Idaho Legislature in 1990. He co-owns an insurance firm, which he will have to leave behind when he takes over for outgoing Insurance Director Bill Deal.
Although Cameron, 54, will take over the department this June, his appointment will require Senate confirmation in 2016. Additionally, the District 27 Republican legislative committee will nominate candidates to succeed Cameron in the Senate. Otter will chose one of the candidates to complete Cameron's term.
“I know the next person in line will step up admirably in the Senate, just as I know that Dean will do a great job leading the Department of Insurance as Bill Deal did before him," said Otter in Friday's announcement.
Otter and Cameron posed for a now-infamous photo in 2013, with Cameron serving as the Governor's golf tee.
"It's called teamwork! AND TRUST! Although we may not always agree. I have great confidence in Governor Otter," Cameron wrote on a Facebook post accompanying the photo.
