Chabad, You Know It

If you’ve never been to a Lubavitcher Chinese auction, now is your chance. The Chabad Lubavitch of Idaho, a growing orthodox Jewish community in Boise, are hosting their inaugural auction with Sephardic (eastern) Jewish food, live music and Jewish comedy from Wayne Cotter. You may not know his name, but you will recognize him from numerous appearances on Leno and Letterman, as a 1990s host of Comic Strip Live and for his cameo in Spy Hard.

The Chabad are raising money for their Jewish Center of Idaho, which provides Jewish social, cultural, humanitarian, spiritual and educational services. For double chai (that’s a throaty “ch,” or 36 bucks, for the gentiles) you can sample Mediterranean dips and desserts and bid on golf packages, kosher cookbooks, iPods, Dead Sea beauty products and an autographed Broncos football, among dozens of other items. What’s a Chinese auction, you might ask, and what does it have to do with Jewish culture? Well, you’ve obviously never been to Twin Dragon on Christmas Eve then, sheyna punim. (Hint: It’s like a raffle, only higher stakes.)

Sunday, Oct. 18, 6-9:30 p.m., $36, Powerhouse Event Center, 621 S. 17th St., 208-853-9200. Auction discounts for advance registration at
