Bown Goes Green Up and Down
Nothing against corned beef and cabbage, but St. Patrick's Day is a bit of a yawner culinarily speaking. Let's be honest, Ireland's liquid meals offer up more cause for celebration than do boiled potatoes. Rest assured darn near every blimey restaurant in town will be pouring Guinness and dishing up the CBnC, but Bown Crossing is doing a little something out of the ordinary. It's a weekend-long block party of sorts.
The Boise Highlanders will make three appearances at Bown: Sat., March 15 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and Mon., March 17 at 6 p.m. Sticking with what they know rather then venturing into food from across the pond, Casa Mexico will serve green enchiladas and burritos, and Flatbread Community Oven will cook up green pizzas for dinner and green gelato for dessert. The Jelly Belly character will be at Powell's Sweet Shoppe giving away free Jelly Bellys and balloons. And if it just ain't St. Paddy's Day without a little CBnC, Tavern has it, along with drink specials.
Fact: The sooner your kids know how to cook, the sooner you can take a break from the kitchen. The once-a-month kid cooking classes around the valley can pretty effectively augment your homeschooling in the kitchen, but there's nothing like a little culinary boot camp to speed up the learning curve. During spring break at the end of March, the Young Chefs Academy at CHF will take your wannabe chefs ages 4 to 18 off your hands for a grand total of three days for Camp I-Can-Cook.

The potato makes is second appearance in Food News this year, again thanks to one of BW's intrepid food contributors who apparently stalks the state's favorite tuber from a safe distance. A few weeks ago, Jennifer Hernandez brought to my attention the United Nations' declaration of 2008 as the International Year of the Potato, and I guess when you're the "It" food of the year, everybody throws a little love at ya. The United States Potato Board, whose job it is to sing the praises of the potato in hopes of increasing sales for U.S. potatoes, is currently hosting the States of Potatoes Recipe Contest. Professional chefs nationwide are invited to submit a potato recipe that goes beyond the beloved french fry and represents the culinary flare of their state.
The grand-prize winner receives a trip to Napa Valley's Culinary Institute of America at Greystone for the World's Flavor Conference in November. First place wins $500, second $250, and one winner from each state will have his or her recipe posted on the potato board's Web site. The contest is open only to professional commercial or noncommercial chefs, so if you're not in the business of cooking, pass on the word to your favorite chef. Deadline is May 31.
