- Felicity Jones is Ruth Bader Ginsburg in On the Basis of Sex
"Our office has a women's forum, a committee of female attorneys that the firm started in 2007," Laura Squyres, Holland & Hart's marketing and business development manager, told BW. "The forum thought a special screening of the film would be really special, given the movie's subject matter.
On the Basis of Sex chronicles an early chapter of Ginsburg's life when, as a struggling attorney and mother, she took on a groundbreaking tax case with her husband, attorney Martin (played by Armie Hammer). Indeed, the case ultimately changes the way courts would view gender discrimination for decades to come.
"Our Salt Lake City office recently held a screening for their clients and our Denver office is going to do the same later this month," said Squyres. "We're renting out one of the theaters at The Flicks for one exclusive event."
Idaho attorneys might also be surprised to learn that the Gem State plays an integral role in On the Basis of Sex. The landmark case Reed v. Reed, which saw an Idaho woman battle Idaho law that was ruled to be discriminatory and unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court, had Ginsburg, then director of the ACLU Women's Rights Project, author the brief for the high court. The late Boise-based attorney Allen Derr, who represented Sally Reed in 1971, even makes an appearance in the new film.
"We're very excited for our attorneys and clients to get an advance screening," said Squyres.
