On a beautiful late September evening, the Boise Depot was filled with friends, family, well-wishers and award recipients last week for the annual City of Boise Mayor’s Awards for Excellence in Arts and History (listed below). Though the main hall is a cavernous space—and the acoustics made some of the speeches hard to hear—it felt like an intimate gathering because everyone in attendance is in some way involved in local arts, history and/or education.

Boise Mayor Dave Bieter opened the ceremony with an engaging speech, in which he referred to the Depot as “the cathedral of Boise” and praised the award recipients for their contributions not only to the arts but to the quality of life in Boise.

The winners’ speeches, which were equally compelling, were filled with gratitude and humility, from Sue Latta saying she knew what an “amazing community of artists” Mayor Bieter had to choose from so was “truly, truly honored,” to Dr. James Jirak being thankful an award for education was created, to LED co-founder Lauren Edson saying she and her company members “stand on the shoulders” of other great local artists who paved the way.

And the winners are...
