French-inspired bistro Petite 4 is like something out of a fairy tale. Tucked away in a quirky, narrow space in unassuming strip mall in Boise's Bench neighborhood, it's one of the crown jewels of the city's dining scene. "Reservations," reads its website, are "highly recommended."
Signalled only by a small sign out front, Petite 4 has already had a big impact since its opening in April 2018. Owners David "DK" and Sarah Kelly set out to make manifest their long-held dream of opening a bistro, but in the process, turned their new restaurant into a neighborhood hub. On any given night, patrons—many of whom live within walking distance—drink wine at the bar and talk animatedly at their tables over French staples like cassoulet and fanciful creations like smoked salmon crepes, served in a stylish, Jetsons-esque space.
As its name implies, Petite 4 excels in the small things. Its appetizers, charcuterie and cheese boards are galaxy class, and no meal would be complete without one of its immaculate desserts paired with wine. Baguettes and table breads come from Sable Baking, which has nested itself in Petite 4's kitchen and operates a pop-up on Saturdays.
