Twenty years ago, Boise institution Dawson Taylor was more or less the only provider of quality coffee beans roasted in the City of Trees, or for that matter in the state. But just a few years after DT opened in 1995, Post Falls-based DOMA Coffee Roasting Company joined the party, and in the last decade, the number of Idaho roasters has exploded to include Evans Brothers Coffee, Maps Coffee, Iron Mule, Landgrove Coffee, Lizzy's Fresh Coffee, Push & Pour and Boise-based newcomers Neckar Coffee, Form & Function and Caffeina, just to name a few.
Caffeina's mix of cozy seating and visible industrial machinery sets its space apart, giving it a feel more akin to a brewery than a hole-in-the-wall coffee shop. The black-and-silver roaster squats alongside a copper kombucha hot tank and cold brew chiller, all just a few feet from tables of guests. Its beans supply not only the State Street flagship location, but also its sister company Coffee Studio and a new coffee and boba spot in Meridian, Urban Fox.
"This is something we've always had a dream of," Caffeina Co-owner Tammy Jenkins told Boise Weekly just before the shop/roastery opened in April. Her daughter, co-owner Lyndsey Hopkins, added, "The goal is to build a vertically integrated company."
