But some people pay our warnings no mind, because last spring, two women invited a guy up the canyon for some drinkin' and some partyin', and killed him. It was a shocker to anyone who was accustomed to hiking the trail, but maybe not to anyone who was used to seeing the debris, garbage and general mess that gets made up in Rocky Canyon by partyers, vagrants or others. And yet, nobody ever expected to go bird-watching up there and meander by the signs of foul play. But that's just what happened back in May.
It started out like so many innocent nights of stupid debauchery. Shawn Halcom, 31, was reportedly seen out on the town, in the middle of the week, with two women who fit descriptions of Jennifer Mercado and Diana Lynn Fledderjohann. They disappeared after a while. On Thursday, a hiker (not a biker—please note this person is very unlikely to have gone there based on a BW Best of Boise tip,Shawn Halcom, 31, was reportedly seen out on the town, in the middle of the week, with two women who fit descriptions of Jennifer Mercado and Diana Lynn Fledderjohann OK?) came across Halcom's body barely 100 yards up the Five Mile Trail from Rocky Canyon Road.
The plot thickened the next Saturday, when someone found a "suspicious bag" in a dumpster at Ann Morrison Park and called the cops. Inside it, they found a broken (!) baseball bat, a bottle of booze, a receipt and some ID belonging to Halcom. The cops reviewed surveillance video from the liquor store in question and found clips of the two women hanging out with Halcom. Probation and parole officers identified the two.
Shortly after that, deputies arrested Mercado, 23, and Fledderjohann, 33. It wasn't long (try Monday the next week) before the pair confessed to the beating and stabbing murder of Halcom, according to the Ada County Sheriff's Office.
Finally, it's coming full circle: On Friday, Mercado pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, according to news reports. For her trailside murderous ways, Mercado could spend the rest of her life in prison.
