The came, the pedaled, they drank. The annual Boise Weekly Bars and Stripes alley cat race sent 84 racers to stops across the city as they vied for prize money, beer and bragging rights.
To win the title, racers had to cover roughly 23 miles, complete tasks at eight stops (including one Slip-n-Slide and one seriously challenging water balloon game) and down three drinks—all while racing the clock.
When all the dust had settled, a few brave bikers completed all the requisite tasks faster than anyone else. Topping the men's category, David Rader came in first, followed by Patrick Nagler and Ryan Weeks. On the ladies' side, Emily Rosenbaum took top honors, followed by Margaret Harvey and Laura Lamonds.
As usual, we couldn't have done it without the support of the locations that hosted stops—The Crux, Crescent No Lawyers Bar and Grill, Spacebar Arcade and O'Michael's, as well as our final stop, Highlands Hollow Brewhouse, which hosted the finale party. Also, a special thanks to those who made sure the racers jumped through the right hoops: George Prentice, Tara Morgan, Karen Corn, Ken Baeyen, Chris Grapes, Taylor Bell, Colleen Asher and Carrie Semmelroth.
Mark your calendars for the Saturday following the Fourth of July in 2014—the next incarnation of Bars and Strips is already in the works.
