ITD Begins Traffic Project Involving Drilling, Blasting on I-84 East of Boise

A major renovation project—involving drilling and rock-blasting—along Interstate 84 east of Boise is expected to begin today.

The Idaho Transportation Department said crews will being drilling approximately 80 holes along a five mile stretch of I-84 between the Mayfield and East Boise Port of Entry exits. Explosives will go into each of the holes and will be blasted to loosen basalt rock which has contributed to some run-offs and crashes. ITD officials estimated that there have been nearly 100 crashes on that stretch of I-84 over the past five years.

ITD crews will have periodic traffic closures in the area to keep motorists away from the blasts.

Additionally, starting Monday, July 29, a 10-mile resurfacing project will begin nearby, between Eisenman Road and Indian Creek. Eastbound lands will be shifted until just after Labor Day while the traffic lanes are resurfaced.
