Times-News: Idaho Man Charged With Bomb Making, Assault With Syringe

A Magic Valley man is behind bars, charged with possessing an illegal explosive device and trying to stab a police officer with a syringe.

This morning's Twin Falls Times-News reports that when Buhl Police were arresting 41-year-old Robert Elkin of Buhl on an outstanding warrant, Elkin, while handcuffed, reached into his pocket and pulled out a syringe. After a brief struggle, Elkin dropped the syringe.

Additionally, a search of Elkin's truck revealed a pipe and what appeared to be gunpowder. A Twin Falls bomb squad later said that the pipe was a homemade mortar. They also found launching devices made with two modified propane tanks in the truck.

Elkin was charged with unlawful possession of a bomb or destructive device, possession of a controlled substance, assault, possession of drug paraphernalia and destruction of evidence.
