George Southworth, a graduate of Idaho State University, former Bannock County prosecutor and Canyon County magistrate, was appointed today to fill the vacancy on Idaho's 3rd District bench left by Judge Renae Hoff, who admitted to drunken driving following her August 2012 arrest in Meridian.
Hoff was sentenced to 32 hours of community service, a suspension of her driving privileges for 102 days and $950 in fines and court costs after she pleaded guilty to DUI on Dec. 11. Hoff retired from her position effective Jan. 4.
In making the announcement this morning, Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter said new appointee Southworth had his "confidence and support as he enters this new chapter in his judicial career."
Southworth is a Navy veteran and, after receiving an undergraduate degree at ISU and a law degree from the University of Utah, served as an attorney in Las Vegas, prosecutor in Pocatello, and worked at a private practice in eastern Idaho.
