16,000 Tweets a Second Bring Down Twitter

If you had a bit too much holiday cheer Saturday, consider what a bumpy New Year's Eve Twitter experienced.

The social network arena registered more than 16,000 tweets a second as Japan was ringing in 2012 (Saturday morning in Idaho), and that was a little too much smartphone reveling, bringing Twitter down for more than an hour. The overload kept any new messages from coming through the pipeline - instead, users were greeted with "Twitter is over capacity."

The site stopped on several other occasions throughout the day, prompting speculation that as 2012 arrived in different parts of the globe, too many "Happy New Years" were tweeted.

Twitter outages have occured before, usually during large-scale events such as the Super Bowl or Oscars.
