Proposed Taxi Ordinance Would Ban Smoking, Require English

Boise City Hall wants to extend a smoking ban, already proposed for bars and restaurants, to taxis.

A new ordinance will be proposed to the City Council on Tuesday that, among other things, would not allow tobacco use by taxi drivers or their passengers. It would also require debit and credit cards to be accepted and all taxi drivers to demonstrate an ability to read, write and speak English.

The proposed taxi ordinance, crafted by the City's Administrative Services and Legal Departments, will be put before council members on Tuesday afternoon in a work session and then an invitation to stakeholders will be sent, giving them an opportunity to provide written comments before Friday, Dec. 9.
